Photography & Film
We believe in sharing the simple power of being outside with everyone, so our photography should show diversity in all forms—representation of ethnicities, body shapes, abilities, beliefs, ages and beyond. Our goal is to capture the most human side of the people we're filming and to find those magical in-between moments. Locations should always be outside, but feel close-by and accessible to all.
Talent and Styling
Talent should feel genuine—cool and confident, but approachable. Celebrate the diversity of humanity by finding talent with unexpected and interesting features. Basically, think of the people at the party you'd want to hang out with.
Styling for our talent is extremely important. Our approach should hit right at the intersection of outdoor and urban style, feel relevant to current trends and be trend progressive. Ironically, using a stylist is a great way to ensure your talent doesn't look overly styled. Consider hiring one for your shoot.
Hot Product Photography
Always show product in context of the appropriate environment. Where will the shoe be worn? What is the most important thing to communicate about the shoe? Create a scene that clearly signals the end use or materials story of each product. If shot indoors, use natural shadows or lighting to provide a sense of nature or demonstrate that the outside is within reach.
Studio Photography
While images should always be shot outside where possible, there are some instances where studio photography is appropriate to communicate a campaign concept or tell a particular story. Please evoke the feeling of natural light where possible.
For product shots, use limited props that contribute to product storytelling without distracting from the shoes. Position the shoes in unique ways, and bring visual interest through movement where possible—especially for performance products.
Color
A subtle pop of orange in each look goes a long way to brand our photography.
Merrell Apparel
Please incorporate at least one piece of Merrell apparel into each look. Supplemental wardrobe should be free of logos and iconic or recognizable patterns.
Non-Merrell Apparel
Unexpected details, sizes, and color combinations should be a reflection of our cast’s personality and always complement and elevate our Merrell apparel pieces.
Cinematic Feel
Shoot with depth-of-field so photography looks cinematic. Do not be afraid to play with unexpected crops—provide tights, mid, and wide shots so there is a range of interesting compositions.
